In this innovative procedure, an artificial metal and plastic intervertebral disc is utilized to totally replace a diseased, damaged, or degenerated disc, in a procedure called spinal arthroplasty. Goals:The goal of artificial disc replacement surgery is to reduce discogenic back pain associated with a degenerative disc as confirmed by both patient history and appropriate radiographic studies. Indications:Artificial disc replacement may be indicated for patients with degenerative disc disease at one lumbar level (L3-Sl), and patients who have had no pain relief for six months or more of conservative non-surgical treatment, and who have had no more than Grade I spondylolisthesis at the involved level. Benefits/Advantages:The main benefit of artificial disc replacement is to provide significant pain relief while restoring and maintaining the natural range of movement, mobility and stability at the implanted level.
