Hospital expectations - after surgery

At the hospital — before spinal surgery

What should I bring to the hospital?

  • A list of medications you currently take, including over-the counter drugs, herbs, vitamins, and any allergies you may have.

  • Your insurance card and identification, such as motor vehicle (driver's) license.

  • Any Advance Directives or Living Will.

  • A small amount of cash, but no valuables or jewelry.

  • Many of these items may be provided by the hospital, but you may prefer your own.

    • toothbrush
    • bed clothes
    • slippers
    • your own razor
    • cosmetics, but no perfume

What will happen when I first enter the hospital?

  • An ID band will be given to you. If the band comes off, be sure to have it replaced.

  • The surgeon will confirm the surgery site, and mark it, ie. with ink, just before the surgery.

  • Inform a nurse ahead of time if you will need to keep glasses or a hearing aid.
